The Roncalli High School girls tennis team won its 12th sectional title with a 3-2 win over Franklin Central this afternoon at Franklin Central. Senior Claire Wagner won at #1 singles and freshman Rebecca Zakrowski won at #2 singles. The #2 doubles team of junior Katrina Gangstad and sophomore Elsie Kerr won the clinching point. On Thursday night, the Royals defeated Beech Grove 5-0 in the sectional semifinal round. The sectional title is the program’s third in the last four seasons and the second straight.
“It was a hard-fought match and the third time we faced them (Franklin Central) this season,” said head coach Jim Stone. “I’m happy for the number two doubles team for winning their match, coming from behind in each of their two winning sets.”
With the win, the team improved its record to 16-5. Roncalli advanced to Tuesday’s (May 25) regional semifinal at Center Grove, where it faced Triton Central, the winner of the Shelbyville sectional.
