Congratulations to senior Ellie Hammerschmitt, who is one of only three area students to be awarded a Lilly Endowment Scholarship from the Johnson County Community Foundation! This extremely competitive scholarship provides students with a full-tuition scholarship to any Indiana college or university, as well as an annual $900 book stipend. Students are awarded this scholarship based upon their academic work ethic, volunteer work and extracurricular involvement. Next fall, Ellie plans to attend the University of Notre Dame and study medicine.
Congratulations to senior bowler Jack Matthews, who is the recipient of the Indianapolis South Sportsmanship Award. The award is in memory of long-time southside bowling leaders and coaches, Tom Staten, and former Roncalli coach Mike McGreevy R’74. Coach McGreevy was the bowling coach at Roncalli for 20 years. He passed away on September 8, 2019.
A reminder that Monday, January 20 (Martin Luther King Day) is scheduled as a free day on the school calendar.
The Guidance Department kicked off the 2020-2021 scheduling season last week with presentations to all freshmen, sophomores and juniors. Scheduling documents, including Advanced Placement, 8 Classes, Student Media (Newspaper/Yearbook), and Central 9 Career Center applications are available online at www.roncalliregistration.org and were due Wednesday, January 15. Please review the scheduling packet that was sent home and continue to discuss your student’s interests as they carefully consider which courses to enroll next year.
During the presentation, students received the proposed Master Schedule for the 2020-21 school year, this includes a listing of which period all classes will be offered. They were reminded to check that they meet the prerequisites for the courses they choose. Each student should determine if the courses they wish to take work without conflict on the Master Schedule. If the courses they are hoping to take do not fit on the Master Schedule, your student should see their counselor immediately so that adjustments can be made.
In order for your student to submit their online course request on February 1, they must first register for next school year and pay the $100 registration fee. Registration is now open!

The Roncalli Speech team is in need of 4-5 judges for the Sectional meet in Greensburg on Saturday, February 29th. By rule, the judges must not know anyone on the speech team and can judge without recognizing Roncalli students. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please contact Kevin Banich.
Want to do all you can to prepare to take the ACT in February? Roncalli will host a ZAPS test prep seminar on January 22 and 23 right after school. ZAPS instructors are ACT test specialists. They're thoroughly trained in not only the topics covered in the ACT, but also on the ins and outs of taking the ACT test. Students who have taken the ZAPS seminars consistently improve their scores by 2-4 points and often more! Those points could be the difference makers when qualifying for and earning college scholarships! Visit the Doorway To College website to learn more and register for this invaluable strategy seminar!

It could be seen as silly to talk about spring break and next year’s moratorium week but many of our families have to make travel arrangements well in advance for a variety of family related reasons. Spring Break will begin with the dismissal of school at 3:00 PM on Thursday, March 26. School will resume at 7:30 AM on Monday, April 6.
To maintain the integrity of the school calendar and instructional time, Roncalli does not allow a family to extend Spring Break by leaving early or returning late without a significant academic penalty. For full details on the policy, please click on the link at the end of the newsletter. Thank you to our parents who have given us tremendous support of this policy through the years.
Additionally, as a member of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, Roncalli High School must adhere to the moratorium week requirements set forth by the association. The 2020 Moratorium Week for the summer of 2020 will be from June 29 - July 6. At Roncalli this means there will be no open gym/no open facilities, no practices, games, rehearsals, etc. There are to be no student activities at all during this week.
Francesca LaRosa Rohrer R’12 invites all middle school girls to join a new choir centered around faith, confidence and self-worth. Rehearsals are every Saturday at Roncalli from 10 AM - noon starting Saturday, January 25 for girls in grades 5-8. Contact Francesca LaRosa Rohrer at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
