Bob Tully Honored

On Thursday, Dr. Joe Hollowell announced that Roncalli will dedicate our football field to long-time educator Bob Tully. We will honor Tully during the season opener at home on August 23 against Southport. The football facility will be renamed Bob Tully Field at Roncalli Stadium. Tully is in his 58th year at Roncalli, and his tenure predates the school, as he began at Chartrand High School, which occupied the current Roncalli building, in the fall of 1962.

President Hollowell said,

“This year we are celebrating 50 years of excellence in Catholic education at Roncalli. Over the past 50 years, there is no one who has done more for our school and community than Bob. He is a never-ending source of energy, optimism and love for young people. His passion for the students of Roncalli is unmatched.”

During his career at Roncalli, Tully has served in a variety of positions. He has served as the school’s head coach in both football and track, athletic director, Superintendent of Finance, campus minister, religion teacher, bus driver and currently serves as the Vice President for Mission and Ministry. For the past 50 years, Tully has also worked as a representative and tournament official for the Catholic Youth Organization.

Tully has had a multi-decade involvement with the Roncalli football program, including serving as an assistant coach on the inaugural team at Roncalli in 1969 and spending four years as the program’s head coach from 1970 through 1973. The 1971 and 1972 teams combined for a 15-5 record and were the first two winning teams in program history. Tully’s 1972 team went 8-2, a record that was topped only once in the first 12 years of the program. Tully later served as an assistant coach for nearly 30 years during the tenures of Bill Kuntz and Bruce Scifres.

Last fall, Tully, along with former Roncalli football coach Bruce Scifres, was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame.

A letter was mailed out a week ago to the parents of all of our current freshmen informing them of a requirement to attend one of our Required Freshman Parent meetings taking place this fall. This required freshman parent meeting was instituted ten years ago primarily as a means to try and establish or insure some “common ground” between our parents as primary educators and Roncalli as secondary educators. The meetings have received positive reviews from parents. The first of four of these meetings was held this past Tuesday.

There are three more opportunities for parents to attend one of these meetings. The dates are: August 28, September 3 and September 18. The meetings begin at 7:00 PM in the school’s auditorium.

NOTE: Parents who have had a freshman student previously at Roncalli are not required to attend one of these meetings. Failure to attend one of these meetings will result in the student not being allowed to stay at Roncalli for the second semester of the school year.

Please direct all questions to principal, Chuck Weisenbach at 787-8277, extension 224.

The Roncalli Cafeteria is accepting applications for our free and reduced lunch program for the 2019-20 school year. Since Roncalli is enrolled in the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program, we can offer free or reduced priced meals to those who qualify. If your family receives benefits from the state in the form of SNAP, TANF or Medicaid, you are eligible for free or reduced meals without filling out an application and will be receiving an email from our office in the coming days to explain the benefit.

If you need to fill out an application, there is a link to the application and a link to the instructions at the bottom of this newsletter.

We also ask that when you fill out an application, you also fill out the form entitled: ADDITIONAL FEE WAIVERS/REDUCTIONS—PERMISSION TO SHARE INFO (if you filled this out once for your child, you don't have to do it again). This form allows us to share your free/reduced status with the Roncalli Guidance Office for the purpose of obtaining other benefits for your child. The link to this form is also located at the bottom of this newsletter.

If you have any questions, please call Eileen Horan at (317) 788-4099.

The Community Service Program is off and running for the new school year. All students in the building were reminded on Friday, August 9 concerning the requirements for service hours being accepted for the first semester. All service hours must be done through a non-profit agency, a school function or a church function.

In addition, when entering the service through the MobileServe app, a student must get an email from the adult supervisor (so that the service may be confirmed), a signature and a geo location (by hitting the "attach location" button on the app). If any of these are not completed, they will get an email stating that the hours were rejected. Once rectified, those hours will then be accepted. Feel free to contact Mr. Striby with any questions.

Here are some links that you can access for key information concerning the new service program and all the opportunities for service that students can take advantage of throughout the year. If your son or daughter has not yet downloaded the MobileServe app, it is extremely important that they do so as soon as possible.
