RONCALLI HIGH SCHOOL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER - August 2, 2019

WELCOME TO THE 2019-20 SCHOOL YEAR!

We welcome the senior class of 2020 along with the juniors, sophomores and freshmen to the new school year on Wednesday, August 7. A reminder that school is dismissed at 2:30 PM on this day. The remainder of the week’s dismissal is at the regular time of 3:00 PM.

We are excited for all that this school year holds for our students, families, faculty and staff, and we are anxious to get started with our efforts to use our gifts to glorify God to the best of our ability!

Please join us in praying for a safe, successful and enjoyable school year for all!

TRAFFIC UPDATE

Construction is still "hot and heavy" here on the Roncalli campus as well as at neighboring St. Jude Catholic School. This will create traffic challenges above and beyond the challenges inherent with trying to get 1,400 people into our school and another 600 into St. Jude School. Patience will be essential for all of us during drop off in the morning and pick up in the afternoon.

For those accessing campus via LaSalle Street from the north the traffic flow will be identical to what was used last year during the construction period. Students may be dropped off at the "back entrance/door #10." Those dropping off will then drive east toward the bubble gym and exit campus through the route that goes behind the blue Providence House and back onto LaSalle Street.

LEARN MORE

For those accessing campus via Prague Road from the south, the traffic flow will also be identical. However, the required expansion of the retention pond by the stadium resulted in the loss of approximately 10-12 spots by the stadium as well as cut into the pathways used by cars trying to exit via this route. It will be an even tighter fit in and around the circle and will require even more due diligence and safety by all drivers.

A workable traffic pattern usually unfolds after about five or six days. Here are a couple of tips that could make handling the traffic a bit easier for you until it sorts itself out:

Dropping off in the morning between 6:50 AM and 7:15 AM might allow you to miss substantial traffic. Picking up in the afternoon at 3:30 PM or after will allow you to miss a great deal of traffic. There is no turning left out of the west parking lot in the afternoon; all traffic coming out of the west parking lot must turn right and go west. PLEASE do not block the entrance ramp to St. Jude’s parking lot that is off of Prague Road; this can lead to total gridlock!

Our police officers ask that you please be attentive to their instructions/directions. Again, the first few days will present some unique challenges as everyone adapts to traffic flow, timing, etc.

GIRLS GOLF CALL OUT

CHOIR COSTUME FITTINGS

Incoming and returning members of Beginning Women’s choir, Beginning Mixed Choir, Advanced Women’s Choir and Show Choir are asked to come to the choir room on Saturday, August 3 between the hours of 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM for costume fittings. It should only take about 10 minutes. You do not need to schedule a time; you may just show up during the times listed. If you need to make other arrangements, please contact Miki Lewinski.

CAFE CHARGING POLICY

It is our expectation that students always have a positive balance in their lunch accounts. As a courtesy to our families, Roncalli has established a “$20.00 limit” on negative charging. If your student’s account is more than $20.00 in the negative, they will be asked to take their lunches and come to the cafeteria office. There the student will meet with a supervisor to discuss the problem and come up with a solution. Seniors may not pick up their cap and gown until all negative balances are cleared.

It is easy to set up a notification with Mealtime to receive an email when the accounts are low, to avoid the time taken away from their already short lunch periods to deal with inadequate funding. We will also be sending negative lunch balance notifications out every day by e-mail.

FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH APPLICATION

The Roncalli Cafeteria is accepting applications for our free and reduced lunch program for the 2019-20 school year. Since Roncalli is enrolled in the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program, we can offer free or reduced priced meals to those who qualify. If your family receives benefits from the state in the form of SNAP, TANF or Medicaid, you are eligible for free or reduced meals without filling out an application and will be receiving an email from our office in the coming days to explain the benefit.

If you need to fill out an application, there is a link to the application and a link to the instructions at the bottom of this newsletter.

LEARN MORE

We also ask that when you fill out an application, you also fill out the form entitled: ADDITIONAL FEE WAIVERS/REDUCTIONS—PERMISSION TO SHARE INFO (if you filled this out once for your child, you don't have to do it again). This form allows us to share your free/reduced status with the Roncalli Guidance Office for the purpose of obtaining other benefits for your child. The link to this form is also located at the bottom of this newsletter.

If you have any questions, please call Eileen Horan at (317) 788-4099.

RONCALLI CAFETERIA SERVES BREAKFAST

Rebel Cafe Breakfast

Every morning in the cafeteria from 6:50-7:25 AM, the Roncalli cafeteria offers many breakfast choices. The cost of breakfast is $2.00. If students are entitled to a free or reduced breakfast, then those breakfasts are either free or $.30. (This institution is an Equal Opportunity Provider.)

SCHOOL PICTURES ON FIRST DAY

A reminder that freshmen, sophomores and juniors will have their school pictures taken on the first day of school. This year, we are offering families an opportunity to go online at MyLifetouch.com and look at a variety of backgrounds and photo options. Families may also pay for school pictures online. This would prevent your student from having to bring an order form with payment on the first day of school. To order school photos online, or to just preview options, please use Picture Day EVTFN3WTR on the MyLifeTouch.com site. If you have any questions related to school pictures, please contact Assistant Principal for Student Life, Kevin Banich.

LEARN MORE

Seniors will be in school uniforms if they have already taken their senior portrait with LifeTouch in the summertime. If a senior has not taken the official senior portrait for Roncalli, then they will be in the appropriate senior portrait attire on the first day of school. The male dress code for the senior portrait is dress shirt and tie, no facial hair, original hair color, and no piercing beyond a pierced ear. For the females, the dress code is covered shoulders (no strapless), modest top (no cleavage showing, and no piercing beyond a pierced ear.)

Just a reminder that all students are expected to be in school uniform on the first day unless their parents are purchasing a picture package. If this is the case, the student may dress up. Absolutely, no jeans, denim or immodest dress allowed!!

FALL SPORTS START MONDAY, AUGUST 5TH

A reminder to all Roncalli students who plan to try out for and/or participate in a fall sport that you must have a 2019-20 IHSAA physical form completed, signed and turned into the athletic office by Monday, August 5th. No student-athlete will be allowed to practice or participate in any team physical activity until the physical form is completed, signed and submitted to the athletic office. TI-84 CALCULATORS

ALGEBRA 2 OR ALGEBRA 1 HON

A reminder that any student who is scheduled to take an Algebra 2 class or Algebra 1 (HON) this coming school year is required to have a TI-84 calculator. This is the type of calculator that is used on the ISTEP+ exam. Many local retailers have them on sale now, and we ask that any “proof of purchase” codes be saved and turned into the math teachers. Students are discouraged from purchasing a TI-89, as these calculators are not allowed on the ACT exam (they are allowed on the SAT and AP exams).

IMPORTANT UNIFORM INFORMATION

REGARDING UNIFORM PANTS

We are very appreciative of the great cooperation we received during the recently completed school year from our students and parents regarding the style of pants that were to be worn as a part of the school uniform.

It is important to note that we are the only Catholic high school in the Indianapolis area that does not require uniform pants of its students. While some students and parents would support a move to uniform pants, the overwhelming majority of students and parents prefer to purchase their school pants in a price range of their choice and at a retail store of their choice. We wish to continue to honor this desire, but it must happen in such a way that we are not consistently wasting valuable instructional time and administrative time dealing with fashion compliance issues.

LEARN MORE

Thus, we ask once again for the total support of our parents and students in making sure there is adherence to specific style of pants (slacks) that will be allowed this school year. In accordance with the student handbook, the slacks must be dress slacks made of cotton-twill material similar to a pair of “Dockers” pants. Slacks must be minimum of "boot cut" and/or straight leg in diameter around the lower leg and may not be worn in a manner that hugs the complete contour of the lower body.

If you look at the visuals below, the three pictures on top illustrate acceptable choices while the three pictures on the bottom with an X through them are not acceptable choices.

Uniform Pants

Please direct all questions, concerns, and/or comments related to this matter to Dean of Students, Tim Crissman.

Thanks in advance for your continued cooperation on this matter.

BULLYING/HARASSMENT

GUIDELINE FOR RESPECTING ALL PERSONS

Roncalli High School commits itself to the priority of each individual student being able to attend school on a daily basis in a positive, uplifting, faith-filled environment. The following is a guideline by which our school will operate as it relates to this issue and to the issues of bullying/harassment:

LEARN MORE

The good name, reputation and personal safety of each student, faculty, staff member and adult volunteer is vitally important. In order to protect students, employees, volunteers, and the school, each student is expected to treat the good name and reputation of other students, school employees, volunteers and the school with dignity and respect and not engage in any activity or conduct, either on campus or off campus, that is in opposition to this guideline and/or inconsistent with the Catholic Christian principles of the school, as determined by the school in its discretion. Any derogatory, slanderous, hostile, or threatening remarks or actions directed toward any of the above by a student will be seen as a violation of this policy and will be viewed as a serious matter, whether it is done physically, verbally, or electronically through the use of a home or school computer, phone, IPAD, or any other electronic media or by remote access during school time or after hours. Some examples include but are not limited to, social media, text messages, blogging, voice mails, images, pictures, etc. Any individual found to have made or participated with others in making such remarks or actions will be subject to disciplinary action by the school, up to and including expulsion.

Because of the significance of the issues of bullying/harassment in the lives of our students, Roncalli has in place a wide variety of strategies to address the issues. These strategies will unfold throughout the school year with a heavy focus here at the start of the school year.

It is imperative that anyone who becomes aware of a Roncalli student who is being bullied or harassed, regardless of whether it is happening in or out of school, is asked to contact the Dean of Students. Failure to report incidents of bullying/harassment makes one complicit with the inappropriate behavior.

EARN MONEY TOWARD YOUR CHILD’S TUITION THROUGH FUTURE FOUNDATIONS PROGRAM

Roncalli offers families the opportunity to work events at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indiana Convention Center and IMS, in order to earn money toward their child’s tuition. A percentage of all money earned is also contributed to the school's Endowment. If you or any family/friends would be interested in working these events please click on the link below, complete the paperwork and email it to Jeff Traylor or call 317-787-8277 x203.

SPRING BREAK & MORATORIUM WEEK 2020

It could be seen as silly to talk about spring break and next year’s moratorium week but many of our families have to make travel arrangements well in advance for a variety of family related reasons. Spring Break will begin with the dismissal of school at 3:00 PM on Thursday, March 26. School will resume at 7:30 AM on Monday, April 6.

To maintain the integrity of the school calendar and instructional time, Roncalli does not allow a family to extend Spring Break by leaving early or returning late without a significant academic penalty. For full details on the policy, please click on the link at the end of the newsletter. Thank you to our parents who have given us tremendous support of this policy through the years.

Additionally, as a member of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, Roncalli High School must adhere to the moratorium week requirements set forth by the association. The 2020 Moratorium Week for the summer of 2020 will be from June 29 - July 6. At Roncalli this means there will be no open gym/no open facilities, no practices, games, rehearsals, etc. There are to be no student activities at all during this week.
